Awake and quiet.

Filed under: Uncategorized — ourtwomalamutes @ 6:47 am

We got word from the surgeon, and when she checked in last Mya was awake and feeling no pain… said she let out a big yawn and had a good stretch. Tears… Happy ones. { She hasen’t stretched her front legs properly in weeks} . I would watch her get about half way down, trying to keep the bad leg out of it, and stop then let out a sigh … Like loosing a sneeze at the last second every time.

I can feel a weight lifting, I think I will sleep tonight.

While looking for some gear for Mya today I picked up a new harness for Macleod, we went and had a guys day on the trails at rocky point. Then stopped for a “doggy icecream”, and a “daddy” one. He’s been feeling a little left out with all Mya’s solo car rides latley. Think he has been a sleep since we got back.

She’s out !!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — ourtwomalamutes @ 10:03 pm

We got the call from the sergeon and Mya is out of the OR and in recovery, she is doing well with no issues durring the opperation.

They will keep her over night and maybe another day depending how she does today. The worst part is over and now her journey begins again.

We’ve just got word that a friend of the family is also in surgery today with a large breed dog, we will walk them over to meet you all when we can. I never even fathomed there was such a big family involved this or how many dogs, cats, people were affected by this. We hear of cancer every day but it doesnt hit home till it hits home… I never considered my self to be “driving with blinders on”, but even with my eyes wide open I just didn’t see the big picture. Game Changer …

Well I guess the game is the same, just the rules have changed.

Today is the day

IMG_20160802_070329Today is the day…

We just dropped Mya off at Canada West Veterinary Specialists for her surgery. She has been really calm and happy this passed week. Unlike the week before, she was in a lot of pain right up until we had our first consultation, she seemed to be at ease since he first visit here. I’ll post again later…

The day Before surgery

Filed under: Uncategorized — ourtwomalamutes @ 11:56 pm

Well we go in for surgery tomorrow , today has been good for Mya, although they rarly do much in this heat . They both have been in the house baby sitting the airconditioner since late morning. This morning she saw the neibours young boys near the fence and tried to dart over to see them, forgetting her situation we guess , and lost her step ending in a bit of a chest slide in the grass. She scrambled up and kept on to the fence to say hi. Didn’t appear to do any harm to her at all. Scared the crap out of Allison though. We will soon prep the house for fasting after midnight, we have a couple of ponds here that she could sneek a drink from if she manages to sneek out of sight for a second, she can be stealthy.

2 days before surgery

Filed under: Uncategorized — ourtwomalamutes @ 1:20 am

Well its been two days since we were told that Mya is healthy and strong enough for surgery , and in two days she is booked for amputation of her right front leg. For the last few weeks she has had a hard time with the pain, untill last week. Thurs. morning we went in for our consultation she had had a quiet night and hasen’t cried out since. except to wake us up in the morning. yesterday she came down the stars to the basement ” our office” , later that night she hopped up on the bed and down again. Her new found viger had me second guessing our decision. As I’ve watched her these last few days I can see that she doesn’t use the right leg when she is getting a little active. When she sits she will curl the paw under and rest on the back of her paw, seemingly to relieve tention on the tendons near the sholder.
Shes a fighter… its like she is in training. I keep wanting to make her lay down and rest, which she does a lot, but when she has had enough sit’n around . she will just get up and hop down the stairs, and go see whats going on outside.
Thats the other thing I’ve noticed, she preferrs to take the stairs… just over 8 years ago we had a single male Malamute “Cy”, he was 13 years old and had a condition that affected his spine and he slowly lost the use of his back legs. I had built a set of ramps leading from the back porch to the deck and from the deck to the ground so Cy could make it up to the back door. I was never able to bring my self to take them down and we still use them today. I have noticed that Mya would rather take the stairs ” flat footed” instead of the ramp. Her paws tend to slide slightly as she hops down the ramp, up is no problem though.
We are thinking of resurfacing with something that has a bit more traction, or redesign to a long tread short rise type of stairs.
so far its another good day .
Time to feed the kids…
